Wasn't he the man who started it all in country fingerpicking? Chet Atkins came along shortly thereafter but Merle may have been first to develop and perfect this style.

Travis's "Cannonball Rag" is apparently a distant descendant of Joseph Northup's huge sheet music hit "The Cannon Ball" of 1905 -- particularly if you listen to "Cannonball Rag" by folk ragtime pianist Dink Johnson, born 1892, which both has bits that are in Northup but not Travis and in Travis but not Northup.
