The eye shield didn't really make things quicker, as there were longer character interactions and fewer hazard rooms - the block and tackle being one of the few tests of teams manoeuvrability in this series. As for Merlin, well he's apparently had enough of dispensing riddles and spells from his throne and is instead hanging around in stocks wearing Cedric's old outfit. Very odd.
