The Aztecs ruled its neighboring nations indirectly by forcing them to give tribute such as food, currency, or human sacrifices (stuff I remembered from college global history class). The sun god, or just God, Quezocoatl, was angry, and sent Cortez as his ambassador. Cortez got the neighboring nations to rise up against the Aztec empire.
