Description: Roma beat ten-man Manchester United Roma beat Manchester United 2-1 in their Champions League quarter final first leg after a goal from sub Mirko Vucinic. A deflected Rodrigo Taddei goal put the hosts in front before United - who played for 58 minutes with ten men after Paul Scholes was sent-off - equalised through Wayne Rooney. Scholes received his marching orders in the 34th minute after picking up two quick bookings for poor and needless fouls on Christian Wilhelmsson and Francesco Totti in an opening period that saw the hosts get into United from the kick-off. There were violent scenes between United and Roma fans following the goal which the Police quelled swiftly, and the second half saw Roma continue to attack United, who withdrew Rooney to a more defensive role and looked to hit the Italians on the break. The first opportunity of the second period saw Totti fire just over after a counter following a Ronaldo chance, but United drew blood on the hour when - themselves defending on their own box - the Portugal wing wizard ran past a succession of challenges before freeing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer down the right, his inch-perfect cross allowing Rooney to control on his chest and fire a sweet volley past the helpless Doni. But an inspired substitution by Roma boss Luciano Spalletti put the second-placed side in Serie A back in front, Vucinic coming on for Wilhelmsson and scoring four minutes later when Van der Sar poorly parried a long-range Mancini shot into his path. After a hairy moment immediately after the goal when Vucinic fired straight at Van der Sar, Roma continued to push for more goals but United kept their discipline, restricting the Giallorossi to long-range efforts, the best of which came from Totti with seven minutes remaining.
