Bahahaha. In American farmland, prairie dogs are pests. Someone got the bright idea of sucking them out of their holes (with a port-o-potty vacuum) and sell them to the Japanese as pets. :D

They loan hundreds of words from all different languages. I do agree, though. I always find it odd when they use English words instead of Japanese. Like, surely he could have said kusahara-inu.

Well, they could have said kusahara-inu, except to them, it wouldn't make any sense. They adopt these words because they don't originally have these things in their country. For example, someone had said prairie dogs were imported from America, hence using English words to describe it instead of Japanese ones. :)
